Critical Making

Live brief with RHCYP Edinburgh with aims to combat the refusal to wear gowns.

The aim behind this project was to create a friend, 'Bear', that children could use to help them become more familiar and feel safer with being hospitalised. We wanted to show children that they are not alone in their worries and to encourage questions which we highlighted in the picture book 'Bears Bad Day'. The gown was designed to provide extra coverage at the back with straps that fasten at the front via velcro tabs as well as a cape that can be easily removed. The cape also encourages play and imagination to help create a bit of joy and distraction from their hospital visit alongside making children feel closer to their new companion.

Concept and book writing were completed as a group, all other work shown was completed by myself unless stated otherwise. Credit for the gown pattern and the box (structure) - Rohan Hollingsbee.
